Utne Independent Press Awards honors ARTitude Zine!For the second year in a row, ARTitude Zine has been nominated for an Independent Press Award in the category of Personal Life Coverage. Woohoo! I can’t tell you how cool this is (although I shall try) – for starters, we’re not nominated in the Zines category, we’re in a category with “real” magazines, each of which expresses a unique world view and way of living. We’re not the organic gardeners, sassy feminists or travelers to exotic lands -- we are the creative types who know it takes a little (a lot!) of audacity to learn and grow as an artist. We are the people with ARTitude, so let’s toot our own horn for a moment! Utne Reader is a national magazine that celebrates the best of the alternative press by reading and reprinting from over 1,500 independent magazines. The Utne Independent Press Awards recognize the excellence and vitality of alternative and independent publishing. Utne’s editors select the nominees through an extensive reading process and careful examination rather than a competition requiring entry forms and fees. In this way, Utne honors the efforts of small, sometimes unnoticed publications that provide innovative, thought-provoking perspectives often ignored or overlooked by mass media. It’s a stunning honor for our small labor-of-love publication to be recognized alongside BUST, Hip Mama, Transitions Abroad – the glossy, tantalizing “real” magazines I devour along with a fancy coffee drink whenever I have time to dawdle at the bookstore.
